Job summary

The City of Chicopee is seeking a Youth Basketball Scorekeeper for the Recreation Division. This seasonal, non-exempt role supports scheduled games by accurately recording scores, tracking fouls, and operating the time clock at the scorer's table.

Ideal candidates have prior youth basketball experience, can engage children positively, and are at least 15.5 years old. Training is provided, and duties include reporting disruptions and attending referee training.

Qualifications

• Experience playing basketball in recreation leagues or trained as a PE teacher or in a related area to know youth rules.
• Experience engaging children in play or sports in a positive manner.
• Must be at least 15.5 years of age.

Responsibilities

• Arrive on site 15 mins before game start.
• Sit at scorer's table to keep score and time clock.
• Monitor scores and fouls for both teams.
• Provide information from scorecard to team managers and resolve disagreements via officials.
• Maintain a positive and professional demeanor toward officials, players, and spectators.
• Submit a report of disruptions to Recreation Supervisor if requested.
• Attend mandatory basketball referee training.

The City of Chicopee's Department of Public Works - Recreation Division is hiring a Youth Basketball Scorekeeper who will be responsible for vigilantly watching youth basketball games and complete score book and operate time clock.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

• Arrive on site 15 mins before the schedule game start time.
• Greet and introduce self to basketball officials
• Sit at scorer's table to keep the scorebook and time clock.
• Take direction from the basketball official(s) assigned to the game.
• Monitor play for accuracy in recording all scores, and fouls fairly for both teams.
• Provide instruction to players at lower divisions as seems appropriate
• Provide information from scorecard to team managers who may be tracking statistics. Do not however, engage in any conflict over the records. Call over the Basketball official for any disagreements regarding the record of the game.
• Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in all situations especially when others are becoming agitated. Address remarks to officials rather than fans or coaches.
• Must provide a report, by phone or in writing if requested, of any player, coach, or spectator that creates a disruption to the game situation to Recreation Supervisor.
• Completion of job application, interview, and school approved working paper and all requested documentation.
• Attend mandatory basketball referee training.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience playing basketball in recreation leagues or trained as a physical education teacher or in a related area sufficiently to be knowledgeable of the rules of basketball at the youth level. - Required
