Job summary

The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Works – Recreation Division is hiring a Youth Basketball Referee responsible for monitoring and officiating youth basketball games. The role requires arriving early, overseeing gear checks, and maintaining game integrity with fair calls and clear communication.

Selected candidates will complete required training, attend a referee briefing, and provide necessary documentation.

Qualifications

• Experience playing basketball in recreation leagues or trained as a physical education teacher or in a related area sufficiently to be knowledgeable of the rules of basketball at the youth level. - Required
• Experience engaging children in play or sports in a positive manner. - Required
• Must be at least 16 years of age. - Required

Responsibilities

• Arrive on site 15 mins before the scheduled game start time.
• Greet and introduce self to both teams coaches.
• Inspect players for appropriate gear - tied sneakers, tucked in uniform shirts, jewelry, and mouth guards as required by division.
• Hold a pre-game meeting mid-court with team captains and/or coaches to clarify questions and starting sides.
• Monitor play for roughness and fouls and call fairly for both teams.
• Provide instruction to players and coaches at lower divisions as appropriate.
• Follow the play physically up and down to have a good view of the action.
• Maintain a positive and professional demeanor, addressing remarks to coaches, not fans.
• You are in control of the game and decide if it should stop for concerns.
• Must provide a report of any behavior that is unsportsmanlike or disruptive.
• Must complete application, interview and provide school approved work papers and all requested documents.
• Attend mandatory basketball referee training.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

• Arrive on site 15 mins before the schedule game start time.
• Greet and introduce self to both teams coaches.
• Inspect players for appropriate gear -tied sneakers, tucked in uniform shirts, jewelry, and mouth guards as required by division.
• Hold a pre-game meeting mid-court with team captains and or coaches as time allows to clarify any questions, boundary lines,
• and determine starting sides.
• Monitor play for excessive roughness, rule violations, fouls and call fairly for both teams.
• Provide instruction to players and coaches at lower divisions as seems appropriate.
• Follow the play physically up and down so as to have a good view of the action.
• Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in all situations especially when others are becoming agitated. Address remarks to coaches rather than fans.
• You are the one person in control of the game. You decide if the game needs to stop due rough play, player, coach or spectator behavior or other concerns.
• Must provide a report by phone, or in writing if requested, of any player coach or spectator whose behavior is un-sportsmanlike, is asked to leave the field or is disruptive of the game.
• Must complete application, interview and provide school approved work papers and all requested documents.
• Attend mandatory basketball referee training.
