Job summary

The City of Santa Cruz is seeking year-round outdoor Aquatic Instructors for Harvey West Pool. A Water Safety Instructor certificate from the American Red Cross is highly desirable.

Under supervision, you will instruct swimming programs, supervise lifeguards, and support pool operations and safety across a variety of duties. This temporary role is limited to 999 hours per fiscal year and is represented by the SEIU bargaining unit.

Qualifications

• Instructs swimming classes, prepares lesson plans, evaluates students, and issues certificates.
• Assists in determining instruction needs, develops classes and promotional materials.
• Assists the public with program information, inquiries, and pool rules interpretations.
• Responds to emergencies, administers first aid, and completes incident reports.
• Ensures lifeguard-to-student ratios and May perform lifeguarding duties.
• Performs clerical duties and maintains pool operation information.
• Inventories and maintains instructional equipment and supplies.
• Reports on pool repairs and completes daily records.

Responsibilities

• Instructs and supervises swimming programs and lifeguard duties as assigned.
• Maintains safety and health compliance at Harvey West Pool.
• Supports clerical tasks and inventory management for pool operations.
• Responds to emergencies with appropriate first aid and incident documentation.
