Role Summary
The Yard Supervisor is accountable for the safe, accurate, and on-time execution of all yard operations at the Huntsville branch. The role supervises Yard Associates, owns the yard’s contribution to on time and in full delivery performance, and is accountable for the condition, organization, and safety of the yard. The Yard Supervisor leads through direct daily contact with the team and is responsible for the results that team produces.
Scope of the Position
This position directly supervises Yard Associates at the Huntsville branch. Responsible for approximately 15 team members. The Yard Supervisor works alongside Dispatch, Sales, and branch leadership to meet delivery commitments, and operates primarily outdoors in varied weather conditions.

Team Supervision and Development
- Lead, coach, and supervise Yard Associates, building a team that performs safely and accurately without direct oversight.
- Own staffing levels, scheduling, and coverage so the yard is manned to operational demand.
- Conduct performance reviews and manage employee relations in accordance with company policy.
- Set clear daily expectations and hold the team accountable to them.
Operational Execution
- Accountable for accurate order pulling, staging, and load readiness at the Huntsville yard.
- Accountable for the yard’s contribution to on time and in full delivery performance.
- Maintain yard organization and inventory accessibility so material can be located and moved without delay.
- Coordinate with Dispatch so staged orders are accurate and ready at the scheduled load time.
- Identify and remove recurring causes of delay and rework rather than managing around them.
Performance and Results
- Named owner of the yard metrics reported on the branch scorecard. Accountable for the result, the accuracy of the number, and the action taken when it moves off goal.
- Monitor and control yard labor hours and equipment expense against plan.
Safety and Compliance
- Accountable for a clean, safe, and secure yard, free of identified hazards.
- Ensure required safety training is completed and documented for all yard staff.
- Ensure material handling equipment is serviceable and that operators are trained and certified to operate it.
- Enforce OSHA and company safety policy without exception.
Documentation and Reporting
- Accountable for the accuracy and timely completion of all yard documentation.
- Report operational status, safety incidents, equipment issues, and personnel concerns to branch leadership.
Customer Service
- Hold the yard team to a professional standard in every interaction with internal and external customers.
- Resolve customer issues arising at the yard, escalating when the resolution exceeds the role’s authority.
Position Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and hold accountable an hourly team.
- Working knowledge of material handling equipment and yard safety requirements.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities under time pressure.
- Effective written and verbal communication.
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 1 year in a supervisory role within a yard, warehouse, or similar operation; prior lumber experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in varied outdoor weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, humid, windy).
- The ability to stand and walk frequently throughout the day.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance.
- Ability to lift 150 pounds with assistance.
- Must be able to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment.
