Job summary

SMS Shipbreaking, LLC in Brownsville, TX is seeking a skilled Yard Cutter to operate handheld torches and cut scrap metal to specified sizes, while maintaining strict safety protocols aboard a Marine Vessel or in the yard.

The ideal candidate can inspect and monitor cutting equipment, follow proper procedures to prevent damage and injury, and work in a fast-paced environment with PPE and hazard awareness. DHS-compliant safety is emphasized.

Qualifications

• Experience with metal cutting in a yard or shipyard environment.
• Knowledge of PPE and safety protocols for hot work.

Responsibilities

• Cut scrap metal materials into prescribed sizes using a handheld torch in the yard.
• Inspect the cutting equipment (torch and hoses) and ensure it is in safe condition.
• Follow proper cutting procedures to prevent damage to equipment and personal injury.
• Assess scrap metal to determine appropriate cutting methods.
• Be knowledgeable about safe cutting practices and related torch handling and PPE.
• Ensure gas and oxygen filters are in good safe condition.
• Inspect cut vessel sections prior to hot work to drain tanks and remove flammables.
• Adhere to safety requirements in a scrap yard environment.

Yard Cutter

MS Shipbreaking, LLC is one of the few approved ship recyclers in the nation and also handles the dismantling and recycling of oil drilling rigs and oil production platforms. SMS in Brownsville, TX is seeking a highly skilled and safety‑focused Yard Cutter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for cutting scrap metal materials into proscribed sizes using a handheld torch in a designated area within the yard.
• Inspect the cutting equipment (torch and hoses) assigned.
• Ensure proper cutting procedures are followed to prevent damage to equipment and personal injury.
• Ability to assess and distinguish between varying types of scrap metal material to determine appropriate cutting methods.
• Knowledge of safe cutting and related torch nursing activities, including PPE and cutting process and procedures.
• Make sure the gas and oxygen filters are in good safe condition.
• Inspect cut vessel section prior to hot work to ensure any and all tanks have been drained and free of flammable liquids and all insulation, wood and cable have been removed.
• Knowledge of and adherence to safety requirements in a scrap yard environment, including use of proper PPE.
• Perform any and all other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

Ability to walk more than 1000 yards; stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift and carry no more than 50 lbs.; climb stairs and/or ladders; stooping; crawling; reaching; handling; pushing; pulling; twisting; kneeling; squatting; seeing; speaking; hearing.

Working Conditions

Aboard a Marine Vessel or dismantling yard.

Hazards

Heat, rain, fire, burns, falls, noise and inhalation.
