Job summary

Chestnut Hill College Writing Center is seeking a part-time Writing Tutor to support undergraduate and graduate students through individualized tutoring across the writing process. You will help interpret assignments, brainstorm ideas, organise content, and develop strong arguments with proper citations.

The role emphasizes inclusive, welcoming tutoring environments, collaboration with staff, and adherence to FERPA and college policies.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate coursework at Chestnut Hill College and remain in good academic standing.
  • Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
  • Graduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
  • Strong academic writing skills, especially developing source-based arguments, explaining complex ideas clearly, organizing information, and responding fully to assignment requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct individual tutoring sessions with undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines and stages of the writing process.
  • Help students interpret assignments, brainstorm, develop, and organize ideas.
  • Support development of academic arguments, thesis statements, evidence, contextual explanations, introductions, and conclusions.
  • Help students incorporate quotations, paraphrasing, and citations appropriately.
  • Guide students in clarifying, expanding, reducing, or reorganizing writing.
  • Help students recognize sentence-level error patterns affecting clarity and meaning.
  • Help students interpret and incorporate professor or peer feedback.
  • Create welcoming, respectful, supportive, inclusive, and differentiated tutoring environments.
  • Attend required training sessions and meetings.
  • Maintain tutoring availability through Microsoft Bookings.
  • Keep records of tutoring sessions and no-shows through designated College systems.
  • Record hours worked in the College timekeeping system.
  • Welcome visitors, direct students to resources, and help with tutoring scheduling and online request forms.
  • May develop educational resources or assist with introductory Writing Center workshops

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be available to work a minimum of six hours per week
  • Dependable, able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, solve routine problems, and recognize when assistance is needed
  • Must complete the Writing Tutor student employment application through ADP
  • Must complete the Writing Center’s online tutor application
  • May be asked to provide academic writing samples or participate in an interview
  • Must comply with Writing Center and College policies, including confidentiality and FERPA requirements
