Job description

Academic Support Writing Specialist assists the director in coordinating the college’s academic support for writing across the curriculum in all modalities. This lead tutor position supports the development of the tutoring program and implements best practices for program success. The Academic Support Writing Specialist acts as lead trainer and as a mentor and liaison to the part‑time tutoring staff on tutoring best practices, writing instruction and content, supplemental materials, and other projects as needed. Coordination of all tutor training regardless of subject or modality, including creating, implementing, and reporting outcomes, is an essential component of this position. This employee acts as liaison between faculty in writing‑intensive courses and Academic Support. This position provides appropriate academic support to students and is included in a regular schedule of availability to tutor students in writing, general study skills, and other related areas as necessary. This position coordinates tutoring for special populations, such as participants in TRiO and student athletes. This employee must be able to interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff. Collaboration and support with other campus partners, including Advising, is expected. This position may require some weekend and evening hours, and travel between campuses as needed.

  • Assists the director as lead tutor in coordinating tutoring services at all campuses, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding part‑time and peer tutors; evaluating, training, and supervising part‑time staff; and provides part‑time tutors with objective, individualized coaching for performance improvement
  • Serves as content‑area expert in writing for students, tutors, and campus partners
  • Communicates with participating and prospective faculty and campus partners
  • Expands services in online synchronous and asynchronous , in-person, and embedded tutoring support
  • Assists in the day‑to‑day operation and maintenance of the Academic Support Center and OneDesk services
  • Collaborates with librarians for coordination of services
  • Maintains detailed and accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Participates actively in outreach efforts, especially employing emerging technologies
  • Coordinates the development and delivery of training for part‑time tutors, full‑time tutors, and staff
  • Leads by modeling tutor expectations and reinforcing best practices
  • Assists the director in Center activity analysis to develop schedules aligned with student need
  • Facilitates and maintains regular communication with part‑time tutors through meetings, trainings, and email
  • Creates a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, experience, and works and communicates positively with diverse students and campus community partners
  • Recognizes different learning styles and student preferences
  • Provide academic advising as needed
  • Participates in ongoing professional development to improve tutorial skill and ensure continual improvement and growth of competence and reflection skills
  • Serves as an area backup to other related departments as needed
  • Travels between Wye Mills and Cambridge campuses as needed
Required:

Bachelor's degree in English or a related field; a minimum of two years teaching or tutoring experience; proficiency in word‑processing, spreadsheet, and other productivity applications; ability to learn emerging technologies; ability to work a flexible schedule; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent analytical and organizational skills; excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines; ability to maintain a positive working environment; ability to sustain a high quality of professionalism while multitasking; demonstrates patience, encouragement, and understanding.

Desired:

Master’s degree in rhetoric and composition or related degree; a strong commitment to interdisciplinary content knowledge; three or more years’ experience tutoring in a community college or academic support center; one year’s supervisory or mentoring experience; experience delivering or developing synchronous online tutoring support; experience using TracCloud or other scheduling and reporting platforms; experience providing academic advising. Bilingual – Spanish.
