Writing/Reading Tutor – PTT
Under the general supervision of the Writing Center Coordinator, the Writing/Reading Tutor will coach college students looking for assistance with related assignments. Writing Tutors work in both face‑to‑face and online sessions, and all tutors receive paid training. This is a part‑time temporary position offered on an as‑needed basis.
Essential Functions
- Provide tutoring in writing and reading for any SCC student or staff member on any type of assignment or task, using best‑practice approaches in writing‑center theory.
- Conduct sessions on the Lincoln Campus and online via SCC’s Smarthinking platform.
- Maintain accurate records of student sessions and submit timely web time entries.
- Promote a positive and welcoming learning environment, follow Writing Center protocols, and interact cooperatively with colleagues.
Additional Functions
- Assist with keeping the Writing Center clean and orderly.
- Cooperate with the Director of Transitions and Tutoring and the Writing Center Coordinator.
- Provide information to assist with building term schedules in a timely manner.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge or willingness to learn theory‑based best practices in tutoring and writing‑center theory.
- Strong technology skills and willingness to perform asynchronous online tutoring.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Good personal hygiene.
- Ability to arrive for a shift on time and notify/arrange if a shift is missed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of junior‑level college status (60 semester credits) in an English major or similar area of study.
- Recommendation from an English teacher or graduate school advisor or previous tutoring experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Tutoring or mentoring experience.
- Experience with English Language Learners.
- Familiarity with community colleges and community‑college students.
Salary: TBD
Benefits: Part‑time temporary employees are eligible to participate in the TIAA retirement plan through a Roth, SRA, or 457(B) account, with no match provided by the College.
Schedule: Part‑time temporary position with assignments based on program needs.
Background Check: Southeast Community College requires a criminal history background check prior to final offer.
