Working approximately 15 hours per week year-round, the Wrangler maintains the barn environment, works and exercises horses as assigned, conducts routine observations of horse health and condition, maintains supplies and equipment, and communicates needs or concerns to camp leadership. During scheduled weekend or off-season equestrian programs, the Wrangler may also support or lead participant activities based on training, qualifications, and program needs.

Success in this role is easy to see: the barn is clean, the horses are ready, supplies are where they belong, and safety is never an afterthought.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain the barn, stalls, tack areas, equipment, storage spaces, and surrounding equestrian areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Work and exercise Camp Immokalee’s horses as assigned to support their readiness, conditioning, and well-being.
  • Conduct routine observations of horses and promptly communicate changes in health, behavior, condition, or other concerns to appropriate camp leadership.
  • Maintain equestrian supplies, tack, equipment, and inventory in an organized manner and communicate supply, repair, or replacement needs before they affect operations.
  • Regularly inspect barn and equestrian spaces for cleanliness, equipment condition, and potential safety concerns and promptly address or report identified needs.
  • Follow established practices for the safe handling and management of horses and the appropriate use and care of tack and equipment.
  • Assist with or lead equestrian programming during scheduled weekend, off-season, or other camp experiences when appropriately trained, qualified, and assigned.
  • Provide activity-specific direction and support to staff assisting with equestrian programming.
  • Follow YMCA policies, Camp Immokalee procedures, youth protection requirements, and applicable equestrian safety practices.
  • Communicate proactively with the Program Director regarding horse, barn, equipment, supply, maintenance, or safety needs.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Previous hands‑on experience safely handling and working with horses required.
  • Knowledge of basic horse care, behavior, safe handling practices, and routine indicators of horse health and well‑being.
  • Must successfully complete the University of Florida’s The Horse Course: Introduction to Basic Care and Management within 30 days of hire, unless completed previously.
  • Completion of the required course does not replace required hands‑on horse experience or demonstrated competency.
  • Ability to recognize horse health, behavior, welfare, or safety concerns and promptly communicate them to appropriate camp leadership.
  • Ability to safely use, maintain, and organize tack, barn equipment, supplies, and program materials.
  • Dependable and self‑directed, with the ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization with limited day‑to‑day supervision.
  • Must successfully complete required YMCA background screening, youth protection training, and other required training.
  • Additional training, demonstrated competencies, or certifications may be required before leading specific equestrian activities.
Physical & Environmental Demands

The position requires prolonged standing and walking; bending, reaching, crouching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying barn materials, tack, equipment, and supplies; cleaning stalls and barn spaces; and safely working in close proximity to large animals.
