Job summary

Star of Hope is seeking a Workforce Development Coordinator I to advance clients toward living wage employment in Houston. You will coordinate workforce programs, support career planning and employer engagement, and assist with follow-up and retention.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree and 2–3 years in workforce training, plus strong interpersonal and organizational skills. You will work in a fast-paced, Christ‑centered environment serving homeless men, women and children.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement a workforce development program for client readiness and placement.
  • Assist in building employer partnerships and engagement strategies.
  • Provide job search assistance and referrals to training providers and workshops.
  • Develop and monitor training programs leading to meaningful employment and housing stability.
  • Coach clients to enhance soft skills and pursue additional trainings/education.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual program reports for stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and partner organizations to expand opportunities.

Location: 1811 Ruiz Street | Hours: Monday-Friday, One Late Night | 8 Hours Per Day

Job Summary: The Workforce Development Coordinator I will work closely with the Manager to conduct activities which prepare clients to transition from economic dependency to living wage employment. Responsibilities include coordinating and implementing a workforce development program that assists Star of Hope clients in the areas of career planning and placement, employer engagement, and one year of follow-up and retention, as well as enhancing existing workforce development services.

Job Responsibilities:
Career Development – Client Readiness:
  1. Assess developmental, educational, and career needs to clients to ensure the role of education in the transformation process is being fully realized through on-campus and off-campus classes, tutoring, and mentoring.
  2. Provide job search assistance to clients, including referral to job readiness providers/workshops and appropriate employers.
  3. Research and assist in the development and implementation of job training programs that lead to meaningful employment opportunities that can sustain permanent housing.
  4. Utilize volunteers where appropriate to assist in client job readiness.
  5. Conduct ongoing coaching of employed clients, helping them to further develop soft skills and guiding them to additional trainings/education.
Networking/Building Professional Network:
  1. Assist in building networks of employers, training/skills providers, community colleges and other workforce development partners.
  2. Work closely with employers to assist in filling vacant positions that are aligned with SOH’s client base.
  3. Maintain on-going relationships and communication with employer partners to address any employer and/or client need.
  4. Follow trends in workforce development and local job markets.
Program Operations:
  1. Assist in the completion of monthly, quarterly, annual, and narrative reports to various stakeholders.
  2. Clearly communicate the department’s vision to all staff and solicit program recommendations from staff, volunteers, employers, and clients.
  3. Participate in Ministry and prayer activities, as appropriate.
  4. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education, Skills & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Training, Human Resources, or a related field required. 2-3 years of progressive responsible experience in workforce training and development. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to establish relationships with Houston area employers’ and training organizations. Excellent organizational skills.

Demonstrate ability to motivate others with a positive attitude. Capable of functioning consistently and well in a fast-paced environment. Strong oral and written communication skills; proven ability to communicate effectively with people from a variety of ethnic, cultural and socio-economic background. Able to de-escalate anger and communicate effectively with people from a variety of ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Be able to work respectfully, professionally and in a Christ-like manner with everyone, able to maintain required client/staff boundaries and possess a willingness to serve the Lord in a ministry that deals with homeless men, women and children.

Equipment Used: Ability to use office equipment-computer, copy, facsimile and other related office supplies and equipment. Valid Texas Driver’s License, with acceptable driving record and current liability insurance.

Work Environment: Indoor office environment, traveling in personal car and/or company vehicle. Schedule may include evening and weekend hours-must be flexible. Extensive local travel required. Potential exposure to infectious diseases, poor hygiene, drug usage, verbal and physical abuse and other emergency situations relative to the homeless population is normal. Business casual dress in accordance with the Star of Hope dress code.

Relations with Others: Working with other staff members, employers, partners, vendors, and volunteers, to increase employment skills, resources, and opportunities for Star of Hope clients.

Physical Requirements: Ability to move freely up and down stairs and around a large building. Long periods of sitting or standing may be required based on assignment. Able to lift up to 20 pounds. Able to travel locally, getting in and out of a vehicle often.
