Job description

Position Overview

MRISJ Overview: The mission of the Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice (MRISJ) is to build knowledge about social justice, to develop skills for advancing social justice through individual and collective action, and to serve as a catalyst for actualizing Bridgewater State University’s commitment to social justice.

Position Overview: As an MRISJ Student Ambassador, you will play an active role in shaping how students engage with service, advocacy, and social justice on campus. Ambassadors serve as peer leaders who represent MRISJ, share their experiences, and help connect others to meaningful opportunities. This role provides students with the chance to develop their leadership skills, use their creative side, and explore community engagement through a social justice lens. You will develop and lead community building and service initiatives that align with the MRISJ mission, support campus wide programs, and build connections with both the campus and the local community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support MRISJ programming and campus initiatives, including but not limited to:
    • Our three Annual Days of Service: 9/11 (September), MLK Day (January), and Earth Day (April).
    • Local service projects on campus and with off‑campus community partners.
    • BSU annual events such as Homecoming, Admissions Open Houses, Admitted Students Day, and recruitment events.
    • Campus and Departmental Resource Fairs: MRISJ Advocacy Fair, Votefest, Health Equity Fair, Environmental Action Fair, Be Seen, Study Abroad Fair, and more.
    • MRISJ educational workshops such as the Civic Speaker Series, Empower Hours, and other departmental programs.
  • Lead at least one local service project per semester.
  • With guidance from the Program Manager, develop and facilitate one positive social change themed event each semester, including planning, coordination, and promotion.
  • Represent the MRISJ in various capacities across campus to provide a student’s perspective of the work of the MRISJ, including but not limited to staffing informational tables or events, presenting to classes or student clubs, and sharing about your experience with small or large groups.
  • Maintain accurate records of hours worked, responsibilities, and completed tasks for timesheets and regular supervisor updates.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Schedule Information
  • You will be required to attend MRISJ Student Employee meetings on Thursday evenings from 5:00–7:00 pm (specific dates will be provided in advance).
  • You will be expected to complete programming responsibilities in the office during the work week between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness to take initiative and step into leadership roles to support team and program goals.
  • Experience engaging in community service, social justice initiatives, or advocacy efforts, with demonstrated commitment to community engagement; experience with MRISJ programs preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in social justice and civic engagement along with a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and other students.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable within a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to convey ideas and information to students, staff, and community organizations.
  • Strong time‑management skills and ability to self‑motivate and work independently when provided with instruction.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Requirements
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credits at Bridgewater State University in good standing.
  • Availability to work in the office during the work week, Monday‑Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
  • Available on some Thursday evenings from 5:00–7:00 PM.
Physical Demands
  • Standing for varying periods of time.
  • Transporting materials using rolling carts.
  • Setting up and breaking down table displays and materials.
  • Engaging with students in busy campus environments.

Appropriate accommodations will be made on an individual basis to support access to the role.
