Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking candidates for a Welder Trainee role. This program begins with an unpaid three-week training, followed by hands-on welding work in shipbuilding. You will learn SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW techniques while supporting structural and pipe welds on Navy-class vessels.

The position requires U.S. citizenship, willingness to work a night shift (11:00 PM – 7:00 AM), and the ability to pass a background check, drug screen, and physical agility tests.

Qualifications

• Must pass a 3-week unpaid program (120 hours).
• Must be willing to learn and perform welding tasks.
• Background investigation and drug screen required.
• Must be able to pass physical agility test and lift 40 pounds.
• Able to work overtime and in outdoor, varied weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Complete Marine Trades Training and begin welder duties.
• Perform welding across SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW as trained.
• Work safely in various shipyard environments and learn procedures.
