Job summary

Applied Materials in Austin, TX seeks an experienced Quality Welding Engineer to support fabrication of ultra-high-purity gas delivery systems for semiconductor equipment. You will own weld quality across the fabrication lifecycle in a controlled cleanroom, combining orbital welding expertise with SEMI standards to ensure gas system integrity.

The role requires 5+ years of welding engineering experience, hands-on welding equipment knowledge, and strict adherence to cleanliness and process

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials/Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience in lieu of degree.
• 5+ years welding engineering or weld quality experience in semiconductor capital equipment or high-purity fabrication environment.
• Knowledge of SEMI F78, F81, E49.8, F70 standards.
• Experience with orbital GTAW welding equipment from AMI, Polysoude, Orbitalum or equivalents.
• Understanding of 316L stainless steel metallurgy and passivation for UHP gas systems.
• Experience in a certified cleanroom manufacturing environment (Class 100/ISO 5 or better).
• Familiarity with WPS/PQR development and welder qualification under AWS D1.2, ASME IX, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Develop, qualify, and maintain welding procedures and qualification records for orbital GTAW of UHP gas lines and weldments.
• Establish and audit welder qualification programs for orbital and manual welding on UHP systems.
• Serve as site SME on SEMI standards related to UHP gas components and systems.
• Own weld quality within cleanroom fabrication cells including gowning, purge gas control, surface finish verification, and contamination prevention.
• Perform and oversee weld inspection and drive root-cause analysis for nonconformances.
• Provide metallurgical oversight of 316L stainless steel including heat-affected-zone control and passivation.
