Job summary

Applied Materials is seeking a skilled Orbital Welder to join our precision fabrication team in Austin, TX. You will operate orbital welding equipment to build, repair, and test mechanical assemblies used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

This role emphasizes weld quality, cleanliness, and repeatability in a high-precision environment with safety as a priority. Collaboration with engineering, quality, and production teams is essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical diploma or associate degree in welding technology, machining, or a related trade strongly preferred.
  • Completion of a formal welding and orbital welding training program (trade school, apprenticeship, or military) preferred.
  • 3–5 years of hands-on welding experience in manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductor, or high-purity fabrication environment; orbital/TIG experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate orbital welding equipment to join stainless steel and specialty alloys to exacting quality standards.
  • Read and interpret work orders, operation sheets, blueprints, WPS, and P&ID drawings to determine weld sequence and acceptance criteria.
  • Perform mechanical assembly, disassembly, troubleshooting, and repair of vacuum, gas delivery, and pneumatic subassemblies.
  • Inspect welds visually and with precision measuring and leak-detection instruments; document defects or nonconformances.
  • Purge, weld, and verify high-purity gas and chemical delivery lines to semiconductor cleanliness standards.
  • Utilize test fixtures, electronic measurement equipment, leak detectors, and vacuum pumps to test assemblies.
  • Maintain travelers and records of work performed in the production tracking system.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot orbital welding heads and power supplies; escalate as needed.
  • Observe safety standards; keep a clean, organized work area and report hazards promptly.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying inefficiencies and recommending corrective actions.
