Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

The Quality Controller in a weld shop is responsible for ensuring all welding activities, processes, and finished products meet specified standards, codes, and customer requirements. This role involves inspecting welds, verifying compliance with technical drawings, conducting non‑destructive testing (NDT), and maintaining quality records to guarantee safety, durability, and consistency

Key Responsibilities

• Inspection & Testing:
• • Perform visual and mechanical inspections of welds to ensure compliance with welding codes (e.g., AWS D1.1) and project specifications
  • Conduct NDT methods such as Magnetic Particle (MT) and Visual Testing
  • Verify fit‑up, dimensions, and layout against drawings and specifications
• Quality Assurance:
• • Review and approve welding procedures (WPS) and ensure they are followed on‑site
  • Monitor welding processes for compliance with preheat, inter‑pass temperature, and post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT) requirements
  • Identify and document non‑conformities, track corrective actions, and prevent recurrence.
• Documentation & Reporting:
• • Complete inspection checklists, test reports, and quality records
  • Maintain accurate archives of inspection data and quality metrics
• Collaboration & Training:
• • Work with welders, production, and engineering teams to resolve quality issues
  • Provide guidance and training on proper welding techniques and quality practices
• Safety & Compliance:
• • Ensure all welding activities comply with safety regulations and company SOPs
  • Conduct safety audits and maintain calibration of inspection equipment.

Requirements

• Education & Experience:
• • High school diploma/GED; welding technology or trade school
  • 1+ years' experience in metal fabrication, welding inspection, or quality control
• Certifications:
• • NDT Level II (VT & MT) and/or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
• Skills:
• • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, BOMs, and shop details
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem‑solving ability
  • Good communication (written and verbal) and teamwork skills

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand, walk, climb, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires close, distance, and vision; depth perception and ability to adjust focus
