Job summary

The City of Amarillo seeks a Welder I to weld and repair city-owned solid waste containers under supervision. You will train Utility Workers and assist in the Paint and Repair Shop, performing cutting, welding, and light maintenance as required.

Primary duties include repairing containers in shop or in the field, cleaning and painting, and handling related tools and equipment. A valid Texas driver’s license is required; equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

• Experience or training equivalent to completing the 8th grade; welding-related coursework preferred.
• Ability to read and follow instructions; basic map reading skills helpful.
• Valid Class C Texas Driver's license.

BUSINESS UNIT NAME: Solid Waste Collection

REPORTS TO: Solid Waste Maintenance Shop Coordinator

SUPERVISORY WORK: None

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision of Solid Waste Maintenance Shop Coordinator or Welder II. Performs the repairs and maintenance of all city-owned solid waste containers. Trains and supervises Utility Workers at the Solid Waste Paint and Repair Shop.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs semi-skilled acetylene cutting torch and arc welding on containers.
• Performs all repairs to side loader and front-loader trash containers in Paint Shop area or in the field.
• Clean and paint trash containers as needed in the shop area or in the field.
• Repairs damage to wood or chain link fences or other property as needed.
• Supervises and trains Utility Workers.
• Keeps shop area and equipment clean and in good working order.
• Operates forklift and container wrecker when needed and to move, replace and take care of new container sets.
• Performs other job related duties as required.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS USED:

Must have good knowledge of welding and cutting of steel. Must be able to handle and bend steel as needed. Must know how to run and maintain shear machine, as well as all hand tools, sledge hammers, grinders, power tools, airless paint guns/sprayers, one ton container/wrecker truck, ½ ton pickup and forklifts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Requires constant standing, bending, squatting and lifting. Requires a variety of sitting and/or standing while working, based on assignment, for long periods of time. Requires turning over heavy containers and lifting materials of up to 75 pounds and could involve lifting of over 100 pounds with assistance, ability to pull with a force of at least 94 pounds and throwing materials over head. Performs work inside and outside, in all types of weather conditions. Subject to call back and overtime. Should be able to handle the environment associated with welding and cutting. Must be able to work safely around power equipment and heavy hand tools. Regular and punctual attendance is required. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with co-workers.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES:

Should have experience and/or training equivalent to the completion of the 8th grade. Technical school courses related to welding, welding certificate or 1 to 2 years experience is preferred. Must be able to read and follow instructions with a good understanding of City Maps. Should have good communications and organizational skills. Must have a valid Class C Texas Drivers license.
