Summary

As a welder at SMS Group, you will analyze assignments and determine the most effective procedures. The welder assembles, fits, tacks, and welds a variety of complex fabrications and assemblies. You must be able to work both in a team environment and independently on projects. The right candidate will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, reasoning, math skills, and the ability to follow all safety protocols.

What you’ll do

• Work from drawings, sketches, and minimal instructions.
• Assemble parts in proper sequence, and place bracing correctly to minimize distortion.
• Perform welding operations such as arc, MIG, TIG, brazing, and burning in all positions on various metals.
• Operate drill presses for fabrication.
• Utilize cranes and material handling equipment.
• Use precision measuring tools.
• Follow instructions and established procedures.
• Record measurements and pertinent information as required.
• Read and interpret prints, including welding prints.
• Weld according to SMAW, GMAW, GTAW standards; vertical up, vertical down, and horizontal positions.
• Perform plasma arc and air carbon arc cutting.
• Handle pipe bending, fitting, welding, and threading.
• Use horizontal and vertical saws, torches, and cut-off wheels.
• Set up and operate all welding and fabrication machines, with basic troubleshooting skills.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
