Summary

As a welder at SMS Group you will be able to analyze the assignment and determine the most effective procedure. The welder assembles, fits, tacks, and welds a variety of complex fabrications. You must be able to work in a team environment, as well as solo on projects. The right candidate will possess written and verbal skills, reasoning, math and language skills, and be able to follow all safety protocols.

What you’ll do

  1. Work from drawings, sketches, and a minimum of instruction.
  2. Assemble parts in proper sequence, place bracing in correct location to minimize distortion.
  3. Perform welding operations such as arc, MIG, TIG, brazing, and burning in all positions on a variety of metals.
  4. Operate drill press to make parts for fabrication.
  5. Utilize crane and material handling equipment.
  6. Use precision measuring tools.
  7. Follow instructions and established procedures.
  8. Record measurements and pertinent information as required.
  9. Read and interpret prints, including welding prints.
  10. Weld per SMAW, GMAW, GTAW standards; vertical up, vertical down, and horizontal.
  11. Perform plasma arc cutting and air carbon arc cutting.
  12. Engage in pipe bending, fitting, welding, and threading.
  13. Use horizontal and vertical saws, torch, and cut-off wheel.
  14. Set up and operate all welding machines, performing basic troubleshooting.
  15. Set up and operate all machines in the fabrication area, performing basic troubleshooting.
