Job summary

nVent is seeking a welding associate to assemble and join metal components on the shop floor and outdoors. You will handle electrodes, set up welding gear, and produce quality welds in target positions while gradually learning additional techniques and positions.

The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and meeting specifications for bead size and depth. A one-year welding certificate or equivalent experience is required, with a 6:00 am–4:30 pm schedule and potential Friday hours.

Qualifications

• One year certificate from college or technical school or six months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
• Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified in the welding machine operations manual.
• Starts power supply to produce electric current.
• Strikes arc to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
• Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
• Welds mostly in flat position; learning horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
• Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece; chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
• Assists to position and clamp work pieces together in jigs or fixtures; tacks assemblies together.
• Safely operates welding equipment such as plasma, cutting torch, and grinders; forklift certification may be required.
• Other material handling including light duty jib cranes.

Summary:

Welding position assisting with handling, positioning, and tacking together metal components consisting of structural shapes, plate, and light gauge structural components for modular buildings and equipment enclosures, working on shop floor, or outdoors on grounds and work pods.

WHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE IN THIS POSITION:

-Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.

-Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified in welding machine operations manual.

-Starts power supply to produce electric current.

-Strikes (forms) arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.

-Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.

-Welds mostly in flat position, but is learning horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions. Is mostly limited to working with the lighter thicknesses of metals. -Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.

-Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece.

-Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.

-Assists to position and clamp work pieces together in jigs or fixtures.

-Tacks assemblies together.

-Safely operates associated welding equipment such as hand held plasma, cutting torch, and grinders. Has or will receive forklift operation certification.

-Other material handling limited to light duty jib cranes.

One year certificate from college or technical school, or six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Schedule:

6:00 am - 4:30pm Monday thru Thursday. Up to 10 hours on Fridays, as needed.
