Description of Work

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities.

The employee in this position will function as a Welder that will be based out of the Division One Equipment Shop located in Hertford, NC. Work in this class involves the operation of acetylene and electric arc welding equipment in order to fuse metal parts in situations where weld strength is a necessity, such as in the construction or repair of steam boilers and high-pressure steam lines. Work assignments cover the full scope of welding and fabrication to include any welding process on any type or style of equipment owned by the State of North Carolina. This position measures, calculates, and identifies material and fixtures for different projects; selects correct materials as specified by supervisor, prints or drawings. Must organize and lay out work plan for jobs; participates in the NCDOT Safety Program and helps to verify compliance through inspections on a regular basis.

The employee will assist other employees in identifying hazards in the everyday workplace and advise management on corrective actions needed. The employee will inspect shop support equipment (forklift and trucks) and assist with daily cleanup of shop and examine shop tools for damage to assure safe usability. The employee will attend and participate in shop safety meetings and safety classes; research new or better methods of repairs and will be actively involved in the cost evaluation of jobs for cost savings. The employee will report the completion of projects to the shop supervisor and complete daily timecards or other cost or time information pertaining to jobs assigned. The employee will perform other duties and responsibilities, in routine or emergency situations, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of the principles and methods of oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric ARC, MIG, and TIG welding
  • Experience with layout, cutting, and fitting material for welding
  • Experience performing a variety of welding and cutting tasks (that includes structural repair, modification, maintenance, and fabrication)
  • Experience dismantling and reassembling parts welded
  • Experience working from and following oral and written directions and drawings, copying or reproducing items which have been broken

Additional Expectations

The employee will be required to complete NCDOT Materials and Test Welding Certification. Some knowledge of the application of trade skills to the duties assigned. Ability to perform welding in a variety of physical positions. Physical strength and ability to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor for significant periods of time. Basic knowledge in computer/email applications. Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in performing work assignments and the ability to follow oral work assignments, a good understanding of GPS and road maps. Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments. Work is performed with only general supervision in repetitive and routine assignments and may be closely supervised. Examples of possible duties are helping load and unload tires, assisting mechanics as needed, keeping offices, restrooms, shop, and shop yard clean and grass cut. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Must be able to legally operate a State vehicle.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of progressive experience in acetylene or electric arc welding; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
