Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Manage website properties to ensure secure, engaging, accessible sites.
  • Design, build, deploy, and maintain content for ECRT websites (ecrt.umich.edu, disability.umich.edu, pear.umich.edu, intranet).
  • Provide guidance on web content for accessibility site accessibility.umich.edu.
  • Manage information architecture, navigation, content strategy, and site organization.
  • Perform routine WordPress/Pantheon maintenance, including third-party extensions.
  • Ensure compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards in collaboration with partners.
  • Develop a comprehensive web content strategy for ECRT websites.
  • Lead web projects from discovery through testing, launch, and improvement.
  • Lead redesigns of main sites and refreshes of others as directed.
  • Collaborate on monthly newsletters using Mailchimp; contribute to design and publishing.
  • Leverage GA4 and other tools to assess performance and inform strategy.

The office consists of several teams: Civil Rights, Disability Equity Office, Intake and Support, Title IX, and Prevention, Education, Assistance & Resources.

Job Summary

The Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office seeks an experienced Web Designer/Administrator Senior to join its communications team responsible for advancing awareness of ECRT services and resources, university policies, and key initiatives. The ideal candidate is a collaborative partner with deep experience in website management and a commitment to digital accessibility and providing a positive user experience. You will use your skills and experience to maintain ECRT's digital presence across multiple WordPress websites and to develop and implement a website content strategy. This position requires strong organizational skills, sound judgment, curiosity, and the ability to manage projects from start to completion. You will join a communications team of four, including a multimedia designer and communications specialist, that supports the complex communication needs of multiple teams across ECRT. This position will report to the communications manager.

Responsibilities
Essential
  • Manage website properties and ensure that sites are secure, engaging, user-friendly, and accessible.
  • Design, build, deploy, and maintain website content for ECRT websites: ecrt.umich.edu, disability.umich.edu, pear.umich.edu, and an intranet website.
  • Provide consultative guidance around web content for the co-owned digital accessibility site: accessibility.umich.edu.
  • Manage website information architecture, including navigation, page structure, content strategy, and organization of websites.
  • Perform routine WordPress/Pantheon maintenance, including the updating of third-party extensions deployed to sites.
  • Ensure that websites, web content, and hosted video and media content meet university standards for accessibility, including compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines, in consultation with appropriate partners.
Strategic Leadership & Project Management
  • Develop a comprehensive web content strategy to improve how information is presented and accessed across ECRT websites.
  • Manage web projects from discovery through implementation, testing, launch, and ongoing improvement.
  • Lead redesign of ecrt.umich.edu and periodic redesigns or refreshes of other web properties, as directed.
Newsletter Production
  • Collaborate with the communications team and internal partners to produce monthly newsletters, with responsibility for design, build, and publish functions using email marketing tools (Mailchimp).
Analytics & Tracking
  • Use data from Google Analytics (GA4) and other tools to assess website performance and inform content strategy.
  • Contribute to monthly tracking reports to illustrate website and newsletter performance.
  • Research and implement best practices and new tools to increase efficiency and impact.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in web design/development, user experience, graphic design, communications, or a related field.
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience in web design, or a closely related role, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Submission of a portfolio of original work demonstrating proficiency in design and deployment of websites and web content is required to be considered.
  • Extensive knowledge of web technologies and web content management systems, including strong knowledge of HTML and CSS, web accessibility practices including appropriate use of ARIA, and familiarity with JavaScript and other front-end web technologies.
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining websites from concept to launch.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp.
  • Demonstrable experience in working independently to create impactful, accessible, and secure websites.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Commitment to accessibility and inclusivity; familiarity with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1 AA) and how they apply to digital assets.
Modes of Work

This is currently a hybrid role requiring a minimum of three (3) days per week in the office. The work modality is subject to change.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
