Job summary

The 786 Chickasaw Alliance Group, LLC is seeking a Weather Forecaster/Observer responsible for developing aviation weather forecasts and preparing briefings for pilots, camps, and vessels. The position is based in North Charleston, SC and involves deployment to McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

Candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED with relevant experience in weather forecasting, proven communication skills, and the ability to work in extreme environments. The role includes various benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and a 401(k) plan.

Job description

Job Overview

The Weather Forecaster/Observer provides aviation, ship, and site weather forecasting services, maintaining responsibility for developing forecasts and preparing weather briefings for pilots and interested parties such as outlying camps, field parties, and stations, as well as any contracted ocean vessels operating in the area of responsibility. The United States Antarctic Program requires all personnel deploying to Antarctica to pass a physical qualification. The position deploys to McMurdo Station, Antarctica to conduct work locally.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop forecasts and prepare weather briefings for pilots, camps, field parties, stations, and ocean vessels within the area of responsibility.
  • Create weather charts, prepare briefing materials, and perform supervisory duties as required.
  • Take, record, and disseminate surface weather observations and complete forms in accordance with Federal, DoD, and WMO guidelines.
  • Record, transmit, archive METAR/SPECI and synoptic observations per established procedures and support the Global Climate Observing System.
  • Prepare balloon, radiosonde, and ground tracking equipment for upper‑air programs.
  • Launch and track rawinsonde packages, evaluate atmospheric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and wind data from radiosonde flight data, and transmit the results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Must be able to obtain a T1 Clearance through the government customer and pass internal background checks.
  • Valid U.S. passport required and reimbursable.
  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of weather forecasting and observing.
  • Must be able to perform job duties in extreme, cold, dark environments.
  • Must pass medical and dental examinations prior to deployment; some expenses reimbursable.
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently or with a team.
  • Reliability in attendance and punctuality.
  • Practice and promote required safety standards.
  • Proficient in conducting audits and using quality management systems.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Teamwork, negotiation, organization, problem‑solving, critical thinking, customer service, and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to live harmoniously in shared dormitory space with coworkers.
Education & Experience

Weather Forecaster: High School Diploma or GED with at least four (4) years of experience in forecast operation services, including managing and developing observation guidelines, performing meteorological analysis, and tailoring mission‑execution forecasts. Minimum two (2) years of airport/airfield forecasting experience required. Weather Observer: High School Diploma or GED with at least two (2) years as a qualified surface observer at an aviation facility, including recording, transmitting, and archiving METAR, SPECI, Synoptic, AIREPS, and upper‑air observations, maintaining climatological databases, and performing quality control.

Physical Demands

Physical ability to stand and walk frequently; climb ladders or scaffolding up to 10 feet; bend, stoop, push, pull, and work above shoulder; balance, kneel, crouch, squat. May lift up to 10 pounds, occasionally up to 25 pounds. Requires close, distance, and depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.
