Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Mid-Level Water & Wastewater Treatment Specialist to support the growth of our environmental water services practice in the Chicago area. You will apply strong technical expertise to evaluate, design, review, and implement water treatment systems for diverse clients and projects.

The role emphasizes project delivery, client engagement, and proposal development, with a hybrid schedule requiring in-office work three days per week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Environmental, Civil Engineering or related ABET-accredited program.
• At least 2 years of progressive experience in water/wastewater treatment engineering.
• Experience supporting systems for power generation, industrial, municipal, data center, or similar facilities.
• Experience with multidisciplinary project lifecycle from study through implementation.
• Knowledge of water/wastewater treatment processes and system integration.
• Familiarity with environmental permitting and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Support design, evaluation, and review of water supply and wastewater systems for facilities and retrofits.
• Prepare preliminary studies, mass and water balances, specs, and design reports.
• Review vendor equipment including RO, ZLD, biological treatment, ion exchange, and conditioning systems.
• Analyze water quality and develop technically sound client recommendations.
• Assess regulatory requirements (CWA, NPDES, ELGs, RCRA) effects on systems.
• Coordinate with project managers, engineers, env. specialists, vendors, and clients.
• Support execution through design reviews, meetings, site visits, and commissioning.
• Contribute to proposals with scope, approaches, labor estimates, and content.
• Keep current with treatment technologies, water reuse, and standards.
