Job summary

The City of Duluth's Lakewood Water Treatment Plant seeks qualified applicants for Water Plant Operator and Senior Water Plant Operator positions. Certification requirements vary by role, including Minnesota Class C/D for operators and Class A/B for seniors.

Duties cover operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the water system in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Responsibilities include rounds, pump and valve control, disinfection, laboratory testing, and emergency response.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Water Resource Technology or related field.
• Minimum of two (2) years of related education and/or full-time professional experience operating a potable water treatment plant (surface water preferred).
• Possession of Minnesota Class "C" or "D" Water Supply System Operator's Certificate.
• Possession of a Minnesota Class D driver's license or privilege.
• Must obtain a Minnesota Special Boiler Operator's License within six months of appointment and maintain thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Complete regular rounds and inspections of all Water Division facilities.
• Control water volumes and pressures to meet demand for finished water.
• Monitor coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and disinfection to meet standards.
• Provide safe, high-quality water and conduct laboratory testing to ensure Safe Drinking Water Act compliance.
• Operate shifts as required and manage emergency maintenance coordination.
• Coordinate repairs and startups/shutdowns with other services and contractors.
• Train new operators and mentor team members.
• Establish good working relationships with the supervisor and staff to improve processes.
• Maintain 24/7 plant operations including 12-hour shifts, holidays and weekends.
• Be available for emergency situations and shift substitutions.
