Job summary

City of Duluth, MN is seeking Water Plant Operator and Senior Water Plant Operator to ensure safe, reliable drinking water from Lake Superior. You will perform rounds, operate pumps and valves, manage coagulation, flocculation, disinfection, and log data to meet the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Qualifications include Minnesota Class A or B for Senior, Class C or D for Operator; five years of full-time experience preferred; an Associate’s degree in Water Resource Technology is preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum five (5) years of full-time, verifiable professional experience operating a potable water treatment plant (surface water preferred).
• Minnesota Class A or B Water Supply System Operator's Certificate preferred for Senior role; Class C or D for Operator.

Responsibilities

• Complete regular rounds and inspections of all Water Division facilities to ensure proper operations and security of buildings and stations.
• Control the volume and pressure of raw, intermediate, backwash filters, and treated water by operating pumps and valves to meet demand for finished water.
• Coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, fluoridation, and disinfection in the treatment process to meet standards for potable water.
• Provide safe, high quality water in adequate supply and conduct laboratory testing and monitoring to meet Act requirements.
• Operate multiple shifts (including weekends/holidays) and coordinate emergency maintenance needs with personnel and equipment.
• Make initial emergency assessments and determine danger, damage, urgency and inconvenience involved.
• Provide direction and assistance to others in operational and project problem solving.
• Troubleshoot abnormal conditions and coordinate repairs with appropriate personnel.
• Assist with delivery of hazardous chemicals at the facility.
• Record, update, and log data on operation, dosages, chemicals, and plant records.
• Collaborate with City departments and agencies to coordinate repairs and upgrades.
• Maintain plant operations 24/7/365 (12-hour shifts, holidays, weekends).
• Be available for emergencies and shift substitutions.

Education

Associate's Degree in Water Resource Technology or comparable degree preferred
