Job summary

The City of Washington seeks a skilled maintenance worker to perform construction, replacement and repair of water and sewer lines and related tasks. You will operate light construction equipment, assist with meter changes, hydrants and taps, and help ensure safe, reliable utility services for residents and businesses.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED and 1–4 years of general construction or maintenance experience; a valid North Carolina driver's license is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required, plus 1–4 years' construction or maintenance experience.
• Valid NC driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
• Knowledge of tools, materials and equipment used in general construction/maintenance.
• Ability to understand oral and written instructions and operate construction tools.

Responsibilities

• Performs unskilled and semi-skilled trades in construction, replacement, and repair of water and sewer lines.
• Maintains hydrants and assists in meter changeouts.
• Performs utility locates, reads maps, and completes locate orders.
• Cleans stopped sewer lines with hoses, rakes, and shovels; assists with traffic control.
• Operates light construction equipment and hand tools; back-fills trenches.
