Job summary

AlexRenew in Alexandria, VA is seeking an Assistant Operations Manager to support the Operations Manager in directing the daily operation of the WRRF, external pump stations, interceptor systems, tunnel infrastructure, and associated facilities. The role coordinates shift coverage, maintains operational records, and ensures safe, reliable service and regulatory compliance.

You will supervise staff, assist in training, develop operating schedules, review logs and reports, and back up the ORC.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in water or wastewater treatment or related field preferred.
• Five years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in public wastewater utility or similar.
• Virginia Wastewater Works Operator Class 1 License required or ability to obtain within one year.

Responsibilities

• Direct daily operation coordination with Operations Supervisors; escalate unresolved issues.
• Monitor plant processes via SCADA, operating reports, logs, and field inspections; adjust as needed.
• Assist in supervising staff; support performance evaluations and training plans.
• Serve as backup Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC); on-call 24/7 as required.
• Develop operating budgets and forecasts for chemicals, supplies, and training; review inventory.
• Review compliance documentation for completeness; coordinate corrections and regulatory reporting; ensure safety.
• Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance, shutdowns, and capital projects; support equipment commissioning.
• Promote safe work practices and environmental management systems.
• Collaborate with laboratory and process teams on sampling and process optimization.
