Job summary

AlexRenew is seeking an Assistant Operations Manager to support the Operations Manager in directing the daily operation of the WRRF, external pump stations, interceptor systems, tunnel infrastructure, and outfalls in Alexandria, VA. The role coordinates Operations Supervisors and staff, monitors process performance, maintains records, and ensures safe, reliable service and regulatory compliance.

The position offers swing shifts (1:30 AM–11:00 AM, Mon–Thu) with occasional Friday off and a Friday

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred or combined education/experience.
• Progressive supervisory experience in public sector wastewater utility or similar.
• Ability to obtain Virginia Wastewater Works Operator Class 1 license within one year.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates daily staffing, shift coverage, priorities, assignments, and handoffs; escalates unresolved issues.
• Monitors plant processes and SCADA data; recommends operating adjustments.
• Leads daily coordination meetings and communicates risks across shifts and departments.
• Supervises and coaches staff; supports performance evaluations and training plans.
• Develops operating schedules, procedures, and checklists; verifies staff competency and training.
• Reviews logs, permits, and regulatory records; coordinates corrections and escalation of issues.
• Coordinates maintenance support for preventive/corrective work and capital projects; ensures safe return to service.
• Supports emergency response and after-hours coverage; notifies stakeholders as required.
• Promotes safe work practices and environmental management system participation.
• Collaborates with laboratory/process teams on sampling and process optimization; supports Pretreatment.
