Job summary

McFarland Johnson invites a Water Resources Engineer to join our growing team across New York or New England locations. Hybrid work arrangements are available as we tackle hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for transportation, municipal, and environmental projects.

You will develop models, use HEC tools, and communicate findings to clients and teams, while mentoring junior staff and contributing to the expansion of our water resources practice.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
• 3 to 7 years of water resources experience preferred, but exceptional candidates invited to apply.
• EIT/FE Certification is required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within two years is preferred.
• Strong hydraulic modeling, stream restoration, and fluvial geomorphology experience preferred.
• Knowledge of FEMA and floodplain management requirements.
• Familiarity with FEMA floodplain mapping and model development.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Experience with HEC-RAS (1D/2D), SRH-2D, HEC-HMS, HY-8, HydroCAD, or similar tools.
• Working knowledge of ArcGIS and GIS-based analysis.
• Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley OpenRoads preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform hydrologic and hydraulic evaluations for transportation and municipal projects.
• Develop 1-D and 2-D hydraulic models and communicate results to project teams and clients.
• Use FHWA Hydraulic Engineering Circulars to assess scour and develop recommendations.
• Perform field investigations for hydrologic and hydraulic assessments as needed.
• Support planning, design, permitting, and construction-phase delivery of water resources projects.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across transportation, environmental, structural, and municipal groups.
• Participate in client meetings, agency coordination, and technical discussions.
• Prepare engineering reports, technical memoranda, permit applications, and construction documents.
• Manage technical tasks, budgets, and schedules under the guidance of project managers.
• Mentor junior staff as experience grows.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of the firm's water resources practice.
