McFarland Johnson, a 100% employee-owned firm with 80 years of experience, invites you to join as a Water Resources Engineer in NY or New England offices. Hybrid work arrangements are possible. You will perform hydrologic and hydraulic evaluations, develop 1-D/2-D models, and communicate results to clients and teams.

Requirements include a Civil/Environmental Engineering degree, EIT/FE certification, and 3–7 years of water resources experience. PE licensure is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • 3–7 years water resources experience preferred; exceptional candidates considered.
  • EIT/FE Certification required.
  • PE license or ability to obtain within two years preferred.
  • Strong hydraulic modeling, stream restoration, and fluvial geomorphology experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of FEMA floodplain requirements and FEMA mapping.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; teamwork.
  • Experience with HEC-RAS (1D/2D), SRH-2D, HEC-HMS, HY-8, etc.
  • ArcGIS/GIS knowledge.
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D and Bentley OpenRoads experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic evaluations for transportation, aviation, municipal, land development, and ecological restoration projects.
  • Develop 1-D and 2-D Hydraulic Modeling at challenging riverine and tidal locations with technical assistance from team leaders.
  • Develop hydrologic and hydraulic models, evaluate results, and communicate findings to project teams and clients.
  • Use FHWA Hydraulic Engineering Circulars (HEC) to calculate scour, assess stream behavior and develop recommendations for scour countermeasures.
  • Perform field investigations for hydrologic and hydraulic assessments, construction observation and monitoring activities.
  • Support planning, design, permitting, and construction-phase delivery of water resources projects.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams across transportation, environmental, structural, and municipal projects.
  • Participate in client meetings, agency coordination efforts, and technical discussions.
  • Prepare engineering reports, technical memoranda, permit applications, and construction documents.
  • Manage technical tasks, budgets, and schedules under project managers.
  • Mentor junior staff as experience grows.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the firm's water resources practice.
