Job summary

City of Columbia, SC seeks a Laboratory Technician to perform routine to complex analyses of water samples and to maintain the laboratory facility and equipment. The role supports quality potable water services for City customers and requires physical stamina and adherence to safety standards.

Position progresses through Laboratory Technician to Analyst levels with salary progression and benefits. Work involves hands-on lab tasks, data entry in WIMS, and coordination with departments to ensure

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in laboratory science, chemistry, biology or closely related field.
• Six (6) months of relevant prior experience.
• Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Prepare chemical reagents for testing.
• Collect water samples for laboratory testing; conduct tests and record data in WIMS and other systems; prepare reports.
• Troubleshoot and perform maintenance of laboratory equipment; clean and maintain laboratory instruments.
• Assist in maintaining inventory of laboratory equipment, supplies and materials.
• Coordinate distribution system flushing with department personnel to ensure water quality.
• Maintain accurate and complete work records; ensure QA/QC for sampling and bacterial analysis.
• Assist in maintaining laboratory certification and regulatory compliance.
• Handle inquiries from City employees and customers; assist in tracking and addressing complaints.
• Perform general clerical tasks and attend training as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
