This job description is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive list of all job functions performed. The essential duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
Primary Responsibilities

  1. Conduct regular tests of water samples to assess parameters such as pH levels, turbidity, chlorine levels, and bacterial contamination, and take corrective actions to maintain water quality within regulatory standards.
  2. Monitor and control equipment such as pumps, valves, filters, and chemical feed systems to regulate water flow through the treatment process.
  3. Operate various equipment and systems including sludge de-watering, total organic carbon analyzers, chemical feeders, and disinfection systems.
  4. Perform routine maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  5. Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, coordinating with maintenance staff for repairs and replacements.
  6. Maintain accurate records of plant operations, including water flow rates, chemical usage, test results, and maintenance requests.
  7. Respond promptly to emergencies such as equipment failures, power outages, or water quality issues.
  8. Collaborate with other plant operators, maintenance technicians, and supervisors to coordinate daily operations, share information, and support teamwork.
  9. Notify supervisors of any process or equipment issues.
  10. Prioritize safety in all work activities.

Secondary Responsibilities

  1. Assist in completing and submitting required laboratory test forms to appropriate state agencies.
  2. Perform light housekeeping duties inside and outside the plant.
  3. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  4. Obtain the Operator in Training (O.I.T.) certification within 18 months of hire.
  5. Legally operate a motor vehicle.

Work Difficulty

Moderate physical effort is required, including bending, stooping, and handling equipment controls. Duties are performed in a modern laboratory setting and outdoors, with exposure to weather conditions and potential health hazards from chemicals used in water treatment. Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays is necessary.


Work Relationships

Maintains regular contact with the Plant Superintendent, department co-workers, and other staff to receive assignments, collaborate, ensure safety standards, and provide public service.
