Job summary

The City of Menlo Park is seeking a Chief Water Operator to lead the water distribution division in Public Works. You will supervise staff, oversee water quality, maintenance, and operations, and coordinate with engineering and external agencies to ensure code-compliant service delivery.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical, leadership, and analytical abilities, plus a customer-service mindset and professional judgment for maintaining critical water utilities.

Qualifications

• Two-year degree with major coursework in chemistry or natural sciences.
• Five years of increasing responsibility in water quality control, distribution, or treatment, including two years in lead or supervisory roles.
• Valid California driver’s license; Backflow Device Tester Certificate; Grade III Water Distribution Operator Certificate; Grade II Water Treatment Operator Certificate may be required.

Responsibilities

• Plans, organizes, and supervises staff for water distribution systems and facilities.
• Oversees water meters, distribution mains, and valve exercising programs; coordinates with contractors.
• Monitors SCADA for operations and analyzes water quality data; enforces safety procedures.
