Job summary

The City of Cedar Rapids is hiring a Water Utility Service Representative I to perform field customer service for water meters and services. Responsibilities include installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing meters, investigating leaks, and educating customers on water quality and service.

The role operates under supervision with safety as a priority, requires a valid Iowa driver’s license, and includes rotating standby duties for after-hours incidents.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in operation and maintenance of water utility distribution systems or equivalent training.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• State of Iowa Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification within six months of appointment.
• State of Iowa certificate (grade I) in water distribution or water operations within 18 months of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Install, remove, exchange and maintain water meters and AMR systems.
• Operate stop boxes to turn water service on/off for customers and maintenance.
• Investigate customer service inquiries regarding water quality and service problems.
• Identify and locate leaks on water main and service lines; initiate remedial action.
• Inspect taps, wraps, and meters to ensure conformance with plans and regulations.
• Provide condition assessment for capital improvements and participate in emergency repairs.
• Support inventory handling and keep work areas clean and safe.
