The City of Bloomington is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Water Maintenance Technician. This position involves maintaining and repairing the municipal water distribution system, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and operating various maintenance equipment. Ideal candidates should possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License. This role requires outdoor work in varying weather conditions and the ability to respond to emergencies effectively.
This job involves responsible work of considerable difficulty on the municipal water distribution system and its components.
Work includes water system maintenance requiring skills gained through related experience and operation of light automotive equipment on a limited basis. Standard assignments are performed independently under the general supervision of the Water Maintenance Crew Leader; new tasks are initially supervised closely until mastered. Work is reviewed upon completion for compliance with standards, through inspections, work reports, and achievement of results.

Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, vocational/technical training, or extensive maintenance experience in water systems, or equivalent combination.
Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of municipal water systems, tools, safety standards, and computer systems including GIS; skill in equipment use and maintenance; planning and organizing work; transferring technical knowledge; tact and discretion; ability to work independently, communicate professionally, and follow instructions; physical ability to work outdoors in various conditions and respond to emergencies.
Licenses: Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement required; tanker endorsement needed after October 23, 2024; Illinois Class D Operator’s License preferred.
Physical and Working Conditions: Primarily outdoor work in all weather conditions, including travel to sites and navigating uneven terrain.
