Job summary

American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the United States, is seeking a Field Operations Technician to support installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution systems.

The role requires basic knowledge of reading meters, using hand and power tools, and practicing safety procedures. Local travel to multiple worksites is expected, with a focus on teamwork and reliable customer service.

Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of water distribution components (mains, valves, meters).
• Understand PPE, traffic control, trenching hazards, confined spaces and equipment safety.
• Ability to read basic maps and utility drawings.
• Familiarity with performing basic measurements and recording field data.

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate company vehicles and field equipment safely.
• Excavate and install service piping, valves, hydrants, and appurtenances.
• Read meters and record readings; perform meter box work.
• Handle service turn-ons/turn-offs and other customer-facing tasks.
• Investigate and resolve customer service issues with timely communication.
• Maintain forms, sketches, and field documentation.
• Comply with company procedures and escalate emergencies as needed.
