Job summary

City of Las Cruces seeks a skilled water distribution technician to respond to customer issues, install bulk and residential meters, and support backflow prevention to maintain water quality. This is a full‑time, outdoors‑oriented role with demanding physical tasks.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, four years’ related experience, a valid Class A CDL, NM Level III Water Certification, and backflow testing certification within one year.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and 4 years of experience in water systems construction/installation.
• NM Level III Water Certification is required.
• Backflow Prevention Assembly Testing Certification must be obtained within 1 year.
• Valid Class A commercial driver's license is required with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoots the municipal water distribution system to identify and remedy problems.
• Investigates and resolves customer complaints within one day.
• Removes, repairs, and installs water meters and hydrants as part of capital projects.
• Operates trucks, backhoes, trailers and related equipment for daily tasks.
• Performs tests on water distribution components to ensure water quality.
• Maintains records of repairs and maintenance for reports.
• Performs Blue Stakes location of utilities as requested to protect systems.
• Oversees bulk water accounts and generates reports as needed.
• May supervise crew members to ensure efficient operations.
