Job summary

Manson Construction Co. is seeking an Assistant Engineer to serve as Officer In Charge of Engineering Watch, operating and maintaining vessel machinery and systems aboard our fleet.

You will assist in assessing performance, identifying malfunctions, and implementing solutions while adhering to SMS and PMI requirements. The position requires a US Coast Guard license, STCW certifications, and strong knowledge of MS Office.

Qualifications

  • US Coast Guard license required for Assistant Engineer on board.
  • STCW certification required by maritime regulations.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office suite and related software.

Responsibilities

  • Stand engine room watch as Officer In Charge of Engineering Watch.
  • Operate propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery and monitor performance.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and inspections per PMI and SMS procedures.
  • Maintain logs, reports and vessel documentation in compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Assist Chief Engineer with troubleshooting and repair of machinery and systems.
  • Perform fueling, lubrication, ballast and inventory tasks as needed.
  • Support safety drills and emergency response procedures onboard.

Summary

The Assistant Engineer is Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch and is responsible for operating and maintaining vessel machinery and systems. Assists the Chief Engineer with assessing vessel and systems performance, identifying malfunctions and their causes and determining and implementing solutions. Employees may be required to work non-regular workdays and shifts, as well as work and travel out of the area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs duties and carries responsibilities, as outlined in the hopper Safety Management System, including all procedures listed for the position in SMS 6.3-1 Positions and procedures cross reference. Supervises the engine team and unlicensed engine personnel when leading a team preforming specific tasks.
  • Must be familiar with the Safety Management System (SMS) and follow procedures.
  • Officer In Charge of Engineering Watch: Stands engine room watch and is responsible for engine ratings, safe and efficient propulsion and auxiliary machinery operation while on watch.
  • Utilizes internal communications systems effectively.
  • Operates propulsion plant, dredge equipment, pumping systems, auxiliary machinery and other vessel systems and associated controls.
  • Performs fueling, lubrication and ballast operations and takes fuel and oil inventory.
  • Complies with pollution preventions requirements and applies precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and restores electrical, electronic and control systems and equipment.
  • Uses hand tools, machine tools and measuring instruments for fabrication and repair onboard.
  • Oversees and assists in installation, fabrication, maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment, and miscellaneous structures. Includes: welding, painting, cleaning, greasing, observation and inspections.
  • Works closely with the Chief Engineer to maintain vessel seaworthiness.
  • Maintains various logs and necessary reports to comply with company operating policies and procedures and all applicable statutory rules, regulations, and codes. Keeps relevant equipment documents/files, log books and records up to date and according to statutory and company requirements.
  • Performs and documents tasks outlined in Engine Preventive Maintenance and Inspection (PMI) file.
  • Operates life-saving and emergency equipment. Performs duties required both drills and emergencies.
  • Participates in crew safety meetings and contributes to the safety of personnel and ship and must be able to provide medical first aid.
  • Ensures compliance with Manson’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Conduct. Maintain a high standard of ethical behavior, encourages ethical behavior in others, supports ethical decisions and actively seeks appropriate resolution to potential ethical conflicts.
  • Responsible for practicing safe work standards and promoting an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) work environment as a condition of employment.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities desired in candidates.

  • Must possess US Coast Guard license for Assistant Engineer for the position on board: Unlimited license (Limited Oceans and/or Limited Near Coastal acceptable for M/V Newport), as well as other credentials as per STCW, SMS 6.2 Vessel manning and SMS 6.2-1 crew credentials checklist.
  • Education and Experience as required by STCW
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Suite

Able to safely execute duties in and around heavy equipment/large machinery in marine dredging and marine construction job sites. Able to wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) required of various construction work environments (hard hats, personal floatation devices, safety glasses, respirators, etc.)
