Job summary

Manson Construction Co. is seeking a deckhand to support dredging operations along the Gulf Coast. The role involves assistance with shipboard and plant maintenance, rigging, and safe operation on marine construction projects.

The deckhand must pass a post-offer physical and drug screen, have reliable transportation to job sites, and be prepared for 8–12 hour rotating shifts and extensive travel. Prior marine experience and TWIC are assets.

Qualifications

  • Valid photo ID required.
  • TWIC preferred.
  • One year marine experience preferred.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Good communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with work on pipe, pontoon line, submerged line, scow or attending plant, anchors, spud systems, pump, Cutterhead, etc.
  • Inspect and secure pipes and mooring lines; splice and repair cables and towing ropes.
  • Sweep and wash down decks, exterior, and job site equipment; chip and paint equipment.
  • Act as signal person for equipment operators and assist with loading/unloading pipes and materials.

Summary

The deckhand is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and operation for the dredge and attendant plant. The employee must be able to work 8 to 12 hour, rotating shifts on all types of dredges and marine construction projects. Must be able to pass a post offer physical exam and drug screening. Must be able to provide transportation to and from the jobsite(s). Extensive travel is required.

This position will support cutter dredging operations along the Gulf Coast, USA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with work on: pipe, pontoon line, submerged line, scow or attending plant, anchors, spud systems, pump, Cutterhead, etc.
  • Inspects and secures pipes and mooring lines; splices and repairs cables and towing ropes
  • Sweeps and washes down all decks, exterior, and job site equipment on the dredge and attending plant Chips and paints equipment
  • Acts as signal person for the equipment operators and helps to unload, load and secure pipe and other equipment and materials
  • Performs JSA’s prior to work activity and executes work accordingly.
  • Operates vehicles for transport and delivery; including four-wheel rough terrain vehicles
  • Ensures compliance with Manson’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Conduct.
  • Responsible for practicing safe work standards and promoting an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) work environment as a condition of employment

Additional duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities desired in candidates.

  • Valid picture identification required
  • Valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) preferred
  • One year marine experience preferred
  • Must have the ability to give, receive, understand, respond, and follow verbal and written communication and instructions
  • Must be able to communicate, take direction well, and work cooperatively with other colleagues

  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on marine vessels in water
  • Able to safely execute duties in and around heavy equipment/large machinery in marine dredging and marine construction job sites
  • Able to wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) required of various construction work environments (hard hats, personal floatation devices, safety glasses, respirators, etc.)
