Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repair on pumps, motors, valves, blowers, and related equipment within the wastewater treatment facility and lift stations.
• Conducts preventive maintenance including greasing, oil changes, bearing/seal replacement, and chain/gear adjustments.
• Diagnoses complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems and determines root causes to recommend corrective actions.
• Troubleshoots control systems and basic electrical circuits to ensure proper operation of plant machinery.
• Interprets blueprints, schematics, manuals, and wiring diagrams for installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.
• Maintains records of all maintenance activities and equipment history using CMMS.
• Responds to emergency call-outs after hours to ensure plant/system integrity.
• Adheres to safety practices, LOTO, hazardous materials handling, and confined space procedures.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic performs highly responsible, routine, and emergency service, diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance on a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment, systems, and components within the wastewater treatment facility, reclaimed water systems, and associated lift stations. This position requires initiative and independent judgment to ensure the continuous and efficient operation of the plant in compliance with all environmental regulatory laws, rules, and regulations. The Mechanic interprets and applies technical information from blueprints, schematics, operating/maintenance guides, and related materials, coordinates actions with operations staff, and maintains accurate activity logs and reports.

• Performs skilled mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repair, service, and maintenance on a variety of equipment and systems within the wastewater treatment facility, reclaimed water systems, and associated lift stations. This includes, but is not limited to, pumps, motors, valves, blowers, centrifuges, chemical feed equipment, mixers, bar screens, grit collectors, sludge removal machines, and control systems.
• Conducts preventive and predictive maintenance activities (e.g., greasing, oil changes, bearing/seal replacement, chain/gear adjustments) to ensure optimal equipment performance and longevity.
• Diagnoses complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems or deficiencies in equipment and systems, determining the root cause of failures and recommending appropriate corrective actions.
• Troubleshoots and repairs control systems, including pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical circuits, to ensure proper operation of plant machinery.
• Interprets and utilizes blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and other engineering documents for installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.
• Performs inspections of facilities, equipment, and systems to verify proper operating conditions, recognize abnormal operations, and identify maintenance needs.
• Fabricates, installs, or assists in the installation of new mechanical equipment and components within the wastewater treatment facilities.
• Overhauls machines and equipment by disassembling, repairing, or replacing damaged parts.
• Maintains accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment history using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or other designated software.
• Assists in monitoring, inspecting, and documenting processes and system performance, ensuring compliance with prescribed operating and safety standards.
• Responds to emergency call-outs during non-standard hours, troubleshoots problems, and takes immediate action to ensure plant/system integrity.
• Adheres to all industrial safety practices, hazardous materials handling procedures, confined space entry protocols, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and standard operating procedures.
• Collaborates effectively with wastewater operations staff, engineers, and other personnel to coordinate work and resolve issues.
• Operates various hand tools, power tools, and specialized diagnostic equipment safely and efficiently.
• Performs general housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness and orderliness of work areas, buildings, and grounds.
• May assist with or perform minor repairs to plant buildings and structures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (G.E.D.).
• Two years’ experience in maintaining or repairing industrial engines, pumps, blowers, conveyors, grinders, compressors, or hydraulic systems; OR
• Any equivalent combination of formal education and experience sufficient to perform the Essential Functions.
• Valid Driver’s License required; Arizona Driver’s License required within ten days of hire. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required within 12 months of hire.
• Due to potential exposure to asbestos, wastewater, raw sewage and/or sharps (discarded needles/syringes) products, requires completion of OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen training within 90 days of hire. Town will also offer, at Town’s expense, the Hepatitis B series of vaccinations.
• Requires a Grade 1 Water or Wastewater Certificate within 12 months of hire.
• Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Job-related coursework from a community college, vocational, technical, or businessschool.
