Job summary

The City of Fort Smith is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to perform a variety of bench, hand tool, field and machine operations for building and equipment maintenance. Under the Maintenance Supervisor, you will engage in multi-trade tasks with precision.

Responsibilities include maintaining wastewater facilities equipment, inspecting pumps, repairing plumbing and fabricating components. Overtime and emergency responses may be required; residence within 40 minutes is expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; valid driver's license.
• 1 year maintenance or related experience preferred; ability to obtain safety certifications within 2 years.

Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION

The incumbent under the guidance of the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the performance of a variety of bench, and hand tools, field and machine operations, requiring accuracy and precision, in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.Work is characterized by its assignment of duties requiring the application of more than one maintenance trade.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. 1. Adjust, clean and repair all mechanical equipment normally found in wastewater facilities.This includes valves, pumps, drives, gears, conveyor belt systems, chemical feed systems and other various equipment.
2. 2. Dismantle and inspect machinery and determine appropriate methods for performing efficient and cost effective maintenance and repair.
3. 3. Construct building partitions; replace roofs, doors and windows as necessary.
4. 4. Operate acetylene and welding equipment, cuts and fits metal, brazes and welds mobile and stationary equipment.Fabricate equipment from raw materials.
5. 5. Repair and replace plant plumbing and fixtures as required.
6. 6. Paint, clean and maintain wastewater pump stations as required.
7. 7. Perform and document pump station inspections as required per regulatory agencies.
8. 8. Required to maintain residence within 40 minutes driving time to the Maintenance Center for Emergency response.
9. 9. Perform other related duties as assigned.
10. 10. Must work overtime, callout or standby as required.
11. 11. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Maintenance Mechanic I Education and/or Experience:

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Minimum of one year experience in mechanical, machinist or industrial maintenance OR technical trade experience OR utility experience is required.
• Must be able to obtain city required safety training along with Fork Lift, Aerial Lift and Rigging certification within 2 years of employment.

Maintenance Mechanic II Education and/or Experience:

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Minimum of three years’ experience required in industrial or pump station maintenance
• Must be able to obtain a Class II Wastewater treatment license within 3 years employment
• Must be able to obtain a Backflow test and repair license within 2 years employment
• Must be able to obtain city required safety training along with Fork Lift, Aerial Lift and Rigging certifications within 2 years of employment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment in the department.The incumbent must have good verbal skills as well as good organizational skills.Problem solving and analytical ability are required to perform the duties of this position.Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required.

POSITION DESIGNATIONS

This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely.

This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).
