Job summary

The City of Alabaster Environmental Services Department seeks a skilled Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on wastewater equipment, pumps, and electrical systems. Responsibilities include operating heavy machinery, calibrating PLCs and instrumentation, and coordinating repairs to ensure safe, reliable plant operation.

Minimum qualifications include a H.S. diploma or GED, 1+ year in related fields, valid Alabama CDL Class B+, and Alabama Grade II

• Valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License, Class B or higher

Responsibilities

Salary Range: $23.20 - $32.11 per hour

The City of Alabaster is seeking a skilled and dependable Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic to join our Environmental Services team. This position performs preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on wastewater treatment machinery, pumps, electrical systems, and related equipment. The position also operates heavy equipment and machinery to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

• Perform preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on wastewater treatment equipment and machinery.

• Diagnose, maintain, and repair pumps, engines, motors, generators, valves, tanks, chlorinators, controls, and other mechanical and electrical components.

• Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems; dismantle, repair, and reassemble electric motors; rewire electrical panels; replace parts; and repack pumps.

• Install and upgrade mechanical and electrical equipment.

• Calibrate, troubleshoot, and program programmable logic controllers (PLCs), flow meters, pressure devices, collectors, and related instrumentation.

• Test machinery, equipment, and parts to ensure proper operation.

• Identify and report equipment problems and coordinate outside repairs when necessary.

• Perform welding and fabrication work associated with equipment repairs and maintenance.

• Cut and shape metal using plasma cutters, torches, chop saws, grinders, and other tools.

• Operate heavy machinery, equipment, and tools, including mobile cranes, forklifts, generators, air compressors, pumps, blowers, drill presses, welders, saws, and diagnostic instruments.

• Use mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general maintenance tools.

• Inspect vehicles, equipment, and tools and perform routine maintenance to keep them in safe, operable condition.

• Fuel vehicles and equipment as needed.

• Attend and participate in required safety meetings.

• Follow all safety procedures and help maintain a safe working environment for employees and the public.

• Perform other duties as assigned.
