Job summary

Western Virginia Water Authority is seeking a Wastewater Operator I to perform skilled operations at the sewage treatment plant. The role includes supervising other operators in the absence of the shift supervisor, preparing operation reports, and ensuring DPOR continuing education compliance.

The candidate will monitor plant equipment, interpret instrument readings and perform routine and emergency repairs, while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED with related coursework in environmental studies/chemistry/sewage treatment or related areas.
• Three or more years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must possess a Virginia Class I license for Waterworks and Wastewater Works.
• Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 60 days.

Responsibilities

• Oversees and directs work of assigned employees as needed.
• Assesses operating conditions through instrument readings and process calculations.
• Regulates and adjusts equipment based on operating conditions.
• Coordinates treatment process with Shift Supervisor and other operators.
• Generates work requests for maintenance and performs minor repairs.
• Collects samples and records readings; maintains DPOR continuing education requirements.
