Job summary

The State of Indiana seeks a wastewater operator to support the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in maintaining treatment plants and ensuring compliance with regulations. You will monitor operations, perform repairs, and document tests and readings.

A high school diploma is required, with a license or license-eligibility within 18 months. Role may include supervisory duties based on agency needs and comes with a competitive benefits package and opportunities for professional growth

Qualifications

Valid driver’s license to operate state vehicles and equipment.
Advanced knowledge of standard practices for maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
Working knowledge of mathematics for measurement conversions and formulas.
Working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, pumps, controls, and motors for repairs and safety.
Specialized knowledge to test and report on the efficiency and safety of the water/sewage plant.
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and sanitary regulations.
Ability to work some nights, weekends, and during special events.
High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE) is required.
A Waste Treatment Plant Operator license issued by IDEM or ability to obtain within 18 months.

Responsibilities

Assist in compliance with IDEM regulations involving wastewater and related reports.
Monitor plant operations daily and supervise maintenance contract workers.
Operate and maintain pumps, pipes, and valves to move sewage through treatment processes.
Check meters and gauges to ensure plant equipment operates correctly.
Record laboratory test readings and adjust treatment equipment as needed.
Maintain daily log and prepare monthly reports for ISDH.
Clean, maintain, and observe plant equipment for efficient operation.
Ensure safety requirements are followed in duties performed.
Assist with upkeep of the sewer collection system and related systems.
Support with customer service, grounds maintenance, fleet management, and facility upkeep.
