Job summary

City of Columbia, TN is seeking an Equipment Operator in the Wastewater Department to operate heavy and specialized equipment, perform maintenance, and support street and sewer projects.

You will inspect vehicles, respond to emergencies, ensure safety, and coordinate with crews to keep systems functioning. Requires high school diploma and basic computer skills; may require CDL in some assignments.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 6–12 months related experience or training.
• Knowledge of safety rules and hazards in heavy equipment operation.
• Basic computer skills including Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Performs scheduled maintenance and repairs on streets, rights-of-way, and drainage systems.
• Operates equipment such as weed cutters, mowers, and chainsaws; learns dump truck, backhoe, loader, and water truck.
• Assists in asphalt patching and sewer line work; clears sewers and maintains infrastructure.
• Inspects equipment, fluids, and parts; keeps shop areas clean and safe; monitors operations.
• Responds to emergencies; assists with traffic control; notifies customers of interruptions.
• Follows city policies; sets up safe work areas; ensures utilities are marked.
