Job summary

The City of San José Environmental Services Department is seeking Wastewater Mechanic I/II to operate, maintain, and overhaul large engines, generators, and related equipment at the San José-RW Facility. Work includes shift rotations and compliance with safety and union guidelines.

Salary ranges reflect OE#3 terms and CA licensing requirements. Ideal candidates have mechanical troubleshooting skills, basic SCADA/HMI/CMMS familiarity, and coordination with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or California Proficiency Certificate.
• Two years journey-level experience as a mechanic in hydraulics, wastewater treatment or a closely related industry or four years’ experience assisting Wastewater Mechanics at City of San José.
• Completion of CWEA Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade I/II can substitute for experience per policy.
• Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor engines, gas compressors, flares, and blowers.
• Perform preventative maintenance and inspections.
• Use precision measuring tools.
• Welding, cutting, and fabrication.
• Use cranes and rigging equipment.
• Operate precision machining equipment.
• Repair, install, and inspect piping systems.
• Attend mandatory safety training.
