  • Packages waste for disposal and ensures proper labeling.
  • Operates basic lab instrumentation and equipment per SOPs.
  • Adheres to safety rules and GEL core values.
  • Supports other laboratory tasks as needed.

About the role

GEL Laboratories, LLC, an affiliate of The GEL Group, Inc., is seeking a Hazardous Waste Technician to join our team of professionals in our Charleston, SC Laboratory. This position is responsible for the collection, segregation, and packaging of waste created during the analysis of environmental samples. The duties of this position represent routine procedures that are carried out independently.

What you'll do

The Hazardous Waste Technician is responsible for a wide array of functions connected to safely handling and managing samples and waste as they move throughout the Laboratory. This includes:

  • Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner
  • Collects non-hazardous and hazardous liquid and solid waste created during analytical processes
  • Segregates non-hazardous, hazardous, and radioactive waste for disposal in accordance with all applicable state and federal regulations
  • Neutralizes acidic wastewater to reduce the amount of hazardous waste disposal
  • Packages laboratory waste and excess client samples for proper disposal
  • Operates basic laboratory instrumentation and equipment
  • Follows written and verbal instructions
  • Demonstrating and supporting GEL core values.
  • Conducting tasks that support other operations in the laboratory.

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent with some related experience is required.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree (with science or laboratory course completion), along with prior experience in hazardous waste management preferred.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions .
  • Exhibits organizational skills and attention to detail.

Working Environment & Physical Demands

This position requires working in a busy production laboratory, safely handling and storing hazardous waste material and samples. Safety is a priority, and negligence is not tolerated. Safety equipment is provided, and use is mandatory.

  • Precise hand/eye coordination and finger/hand manipulation.
  • Potential exposure to chemicals and to hazardous and/or radioactive materials.
  • Use of office and laboratory equipment and stamina to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects from ground level to overhead, and stand daily for up to 10 hours.
