Job summary

Penn State University is seeking a full-time Waste Collector - Grade 7 to join our team. The role involves operating refuse and recycling collection vehicles, loading mechanisms, and maintaining truck cleanliness while following pre-established schedules on designated campus and town locations. The position requires a valid Driver's License and a Pennsylvania CDL Class B, with 3 to 12 months of related experience.

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with weekends off.

  • A Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Class B required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate refuse and recycling collection vehicles and loading mechanisms to empty containers.
  • Pick up and remove refuse and recyclable material from campus and town locations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of container areas and report unusual conditions.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections and drive in compliance with DOT rules.

Job Title

Penn State is searching for a full time Waste Collector - Grade 7 to join the team.

Job Description and Position Requirements

Operate various refuse and recycling collection vehicles; operate lifting mechanisms to engage and dump containers into truck and hydraulic packer mechanisms to compress rubbish Pick up and remove refuse and recyclable material from designated campus and town locations in accordance with pre-established schedules; separate and deposit recyclable material into appropriate recycling receptacles; transport refuse to dump area; unload refuse; receive certification of weight load at dump area Maintain cleanliness of container areas; attend to broken bags; transfer material into new bag; report unusual conditions and continuing conditions of littering to supervisor Receive orders for special material pick ups, including scrap metal, tires, asbestos, etc.; operate forklift as needed Maintain trucks in a clean and sanitary condition; maintain refuse and recycling dumpsters and roll-offs, including washing, touch-up painting and stenciling; assist in repairing metal containers; replace broken parts as needed; clean by steam, wire brush or power sanding Perform pre-trip inspections on refuse and recycling collection vehicles, as required, including: fluids, lights, air brakes, battery terminal, tires, leaks, etc.; maintain daily log. Deliver, set up, and monitor recycling stations for events such as Special Olympics, Ag Progress Days, football games, sports camps, etc. Perform preventative maintenance on trash compactors at various locations on campus, including checking hydraulic lines, wiring, grease points, etc. Pick up confidential material from various locations on campus and deliver to another location for shredding; ensure the security of confidential and sensitive materials Perform data collection as needed, e.g. for pilot programs, compost material weights, etc. Train and oversee work of other employees

Job Requirements

Requires the use of simple writing, adding, subtracting, whole numbers and the carrying out of instructions; and the use of fixed gauges and direct reading instruments and devices in which interpretation is not required. Requires possession of a valid Driver's License. A Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B required. Over 3 months up to and including 12 months of effective experience.

  • 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • Days Off: Saturday, Sunday

  • Required Certifications Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Class B - Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
Background Checks / Clearances
  • Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
  • This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
  • This position is subject to federal Department of Transportation testing for alcohol and controlled substances (49 CFR PART 40), and physical examination requirements as per PA. CODE 231.85.
  • Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
