Job summary

The City of Portales, New Mexico, is seeking an Equipment Operator I in the Solid Waste department. You will operate gasoline or diesel trucks with compactors and related systems, loading, unloading and transporting refuse with a focus on safety and efficiency.

Responsibilities include routine vehicle maintenance, accurate logs, and working with the public. Shift is regular, 40 hours per week; some overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of operating large automotive equipment.
  • Ability to weld minor fixes on dumpsters.
  • High school diploma or GED desired.
  • CDL Class B with good driving record.
  • Experience with public works equipment preferred.
  • Ability to lift heavy items.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

Responsibilities

  • Operate city vehicles and equipment in compliance with traffic laws.
  • Collect garbage with side-loading truck and use mechanized lifting controls.
  • Collect trash around dumpsters with grapple truck.
  • Transport solid waste to the landfill.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles (oil, filters, grease, washing).
  • Read operating instructions and manuals; keep logs and report malfunctions.
  • Establish effective work relationships and follow safety rules.
  • Work with irregular hours, weekends and holidays as needed.
