Job summary

City of Abilene, Texas is seeking skilled Equipment Operators to safely operate solid waste collection trucks and related equipment on residential, commercial, and special routes. You will conduct routine inspections, report maintenance needs, and assist with manual tasks on routes to ensure timely collection and disposal of waste.

Two levels exist—Operator I (entry-level, no supervision) and Operator II (potential technical supervision) with duties to train others and monitor safety practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• A valid Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
• This is an entry-level position for Equipment Operator I.
• Thirty (30) days of experience with operation and servicing of City of Abilene Solid Waste equipment is required for Equipment Operator II.

Responsibilities

• Operate trash collection or recycling vehicles and related equipment.
• Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance.
• Assist with loading materials and maintain cleanliness of routes.
• Read maps and route sheets to locate destinations.
• Maintain vehicle records and report unsafe conditions.
